Bee tapped his forefinger against the wall-sized screen in the tactics room. The clear plastic was illuminated with green lines that represented the streets of Juxtapose City. An army of small red numbers marched steadily across the screen like scavenging ants. Scattered amidst the green and red was a collection of yellow numbers that periodically brightened and then dimmed to dark amber.

"What are those?" Calyx asked, pointing at the latest six-digit yellow number to brighten on the map. "They glow every once in a while. I know what the red numbers mean--"

"JCPD units," Haney confirmed with a nod.

"-- but what are the yellow ones?"

"Convicted felons who carry the SynTrak marker," Bee supplied, not looking at the empath. "Each number is the identifier for that criminal. When it lights up it means he or she has passed beneath a city tracking device. The department computers can pinpoint a felon's location to within a five block radius by keeping track of the bars he's recently activated."

A chill settled over Calyx's skin. He looked down and realized he was rubbing the veins of his wrist. Living with JC2 in relative freedom, he often forgot that he was not free at all. His leash was a long one, but it was a leash all the same.

"So when I run down to the store to pick up beer, you boys can keep track of whether I take a detour for smokes, is that it?"

Haney gave an uncomfortable smile as he shared a look with Bee. "It sounds bad, doesn't it, Calyx? You shouldn't have been given that," the young sergeant said. "You never got a trial. They're only supposed to use that on convicted criminals."

Bee shook his head. "Haney. We work on Special Teams. You know things aren't always done by the book."

"I still think it's wrong," Haney argued. "Calyx would have worked with us without SynTrak in his body. Wouldn't you, Calyx?"

The younger man's pale green eyes held a blind faith that Calyx didn't expect. It made him feel a little better that in the midst of the ugliness he'd encountered within the ranks of the JCPD there were men like Haney who hadn't completely lost their innocence.

"Calyx didn't have a choice in joining us," Bee reminded his fellow sergeant. The man's brown eyes watched Calyx steadily for argument. "He struck a deal."

Leaning against one of the long tables that bisected the tactics room, Calyx threw back his hair. "Yeah, I struck a deal. But you know what, sweethearts? Instead of injecting me with SynTrak all Captain Dickhead should have done was promise me a photograph of Darkness in the buff and I would have tied on an apron and agreed to bake cookies for you boys."

Haney snickered. Bee smiled a little as the tension eased.

"You really like him, huh?" Haney pressed, grinning mischievously. "You like Lieutenant Black."

Calyx smirked at the other man's teenager-like interest. "Yes. I do. I've traded my Bliss addiction for a Black addiction."

Bee, turning back to the map, advised, "Don't let the lieutenant hear you say that.
